COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Advanced Placement United States History is an intensive, highly demanding course that examines U.S. history using a thematic approach

encompassing pre-Columbian times through the twenty-first century. The curriculum focuses on political, social, economic, and diplomatic history, while also covering intellectual and cultural developments. Content knowledge and historical thinking skills are simultaneously developed as students engage in an enriched content, exploring American history utilizing a wide variety of primary and secondary sources and mediums.  Students are expected to read and analyze a college-level text, articles and excerpts from scholarly works, and primary and secondary source documents. Throughout the course, students will write analytical and interpretive essays responding to both document-based and thematic questions. Students are also expected to complete historical investigations and research projects.

Themes are drawn directly from the Advanced Placement Curricular Framework. They include: Identity, Work, Exchange and Technology, Peopling, Politics and Power, America in the World, Environment and Geography, and Ideas, Beliefs, and Culture. Applicable themes are noted for each unit.

Accompanying each unit are a series of proposed learning topics, essential questions, sources and student activities to serve as a foundation from which individual classroom teachers can expand.  Each unit will conclude with multiple choice testing and/or varied written assessments aligned with A. P. writing structures.
