AP English 11 - Language & Composition

Welcome to AP English Language and Composition! We are very excited to have you analyze the nuances of writing and the ways in which authors subtly craft their messages in order to make them effective.  In doing so, you will learn some concepts to help you strengthen your writing.   While reading is not mandatory for the beginning of the school year, some former students have found it helpful to familiarize themselves with the titles that may alleviate their work load in second semester.  To this end, we have compiled a list of suggested reading that may help you get a jump-start on outside reading for the English 11 research project.   Select two from the list.  You will still have time to read them during the school year if you so choose, but many students are excited to read when they have more time.

Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and/or All My Sons

Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and/or The Red Badge of Courage

Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms

Maya Angelou:  I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Amy Tan: The Joy Luck Club

Happy Reading!
