AP English 12 - Literature & Composition
Advanced Placement Literature and Composition
Suggested Summer Work
Literature:
All of the assigned readings in high school are potential titles included in the AP Literature Exam. You are encouraged to reread a novel from ninth or tenth grade. By revisiting one of these novels as a more mature reader without the pressure of deadlines and assignments, you will gain a deeper understanding of the text and its legacy. Titles to consider: To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, or 1984.

Composition:
Students should keep a journal over the summer with the goal of writing five minutes every day. This will provide ample space for you to collect your thoughts and ideas which will eventually assist you in composing your college essays and responses to supplemental essays/questions (among other useful benefits of journal writing). Use the common application essay prompts for your journal entries. Lists are an excellent start to generating ideas as well: Top Ten favorite funny moments, ten things you know to be true, ten questions you have, etc. Then, compose entries on each of the ten items on your list. The College Essay is, first and foremost, a story that shows something about you that your resume and school records do not.
